Where we meet.

Scout troop 923 established in 1937 has been serving the youth and community of Rogers Park for almost 75 years. We meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm till 9:00 pm in the basement of the Church Rectory, St. Margaret Mary 2324 W. Chase Ave. Chicago, IL 69645
The Troop committee meets at the same time every 3rd Tuesday of the month. All parents are welcome.

How to Join the Troop

Membership is open to boys who are 11, but not yet 18 years old OR have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10 OR have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old. Membership is open to all religious faiths. Parents, prospective Boy Scouts, and family members are welcome to visit any meeting. Initial cost to join the troop totals $35.00, which includes registration fees, a copy of the Boy Scout Handbook, uniform patches, and a subscription to Boy's Life. Full uniform is not required immediately, but is encouraged. Minimum uniform is the official uniform shirt with correct patches, which should be obtained within one month of joining. We welcome the applications of adults who wish to volunteer with the troop. Adult volunteers serve the troop in a variety of jobs—everything from Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters to Troop Committee Members, Merit Badge Counselors, and Chartered Organization Representatives. Applicants do not need previous Scouting experience, just a willingness to help, and to follow the principles of Scouting.  A parent or guardian must be present at joining to complete the registration.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is the highest accomplishment a boy can achieve.  About 2 out of every hundred boys who join Scouting ever become an Eagle.   Attaining this rank requires mastering all the basic skills involved in Scouting, and progressing through the ranks from Tenderfoot, to Second Class, to First Class, to Star, on to Life Scout, and finally Eagle.  This process requires performing service to troop and community, earning 21 Merit Badges, and leading others in a significant project of benefit to the community.  All this must be completed before the Scout's 18th birthday.  Eagle Scout is the only rank that remains with a Scout forever.  You are always an Eagle, and that distinction remains with you for life.

Silver Squirrel Award

Unit-based Recognition for Troop, Pack, Crew and Ship Scouters

Need a way to acknowledge that dedicated but uncelebrated Scouter?  You know the one- the person that's always there when they're needed?  The person that makes your program work, but will never be considered for the District Award of Merit or the Silver Beaver?  Here's the answer!

History of the Award

The Silver Squirrel Award was developed to recognize Scouters in a Chicago Boy Scout Troop who had given of their time and effort over the years, providing the support needed to keep troop program functioning smoothly.  Since these Scouters had devoted all their efforts at the unit level rather than  the district or council level, there was little chance that they would ever be nominated for the District Award of Merit, or the Silver Beaver.  The troop committee felt that these individuals should be recognized in a manner consistent with recognition at higher levels, and decided to institute the Silver Squirrel Award.   The Silver Squirrel was first  awarded in 2005.

The Silver Squirrel Award is being made available to any unit that wishes to recognize their own Scouters in a manner consistent with the history of the award. It has been awarded to Scouters in Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, and Sea Scout Ships.  The Silver Squirrel has been awarded by camp staff to Camp Rangers as well.

How to Order the Silver Squirrel Award

The Silver Squirrel Award is $30.00, plus $5.00 shipping and handling. (The price increase after 6 years is due to an increase in the manufacturing cost.)

We accept your unit check, personal check or money order made payable to Boy Scout Troop 923.

Sorry, no credit card orders accepted.  (This is not a commercial enterprise, and the cost of the arrangements for accepting credit cards is simply too high.)

Please print and complete the order form found at the links at the lower left.  Please follow the instructions on the form.  This form requires Adobe Acrobat, a free utility which can be obtained by going to:
